The Madrid Apartments

History

Built in 1927, this 14-unit residential building celebrates the distinct architecture of Regina’s early downtown. The Madrid exudes character while each suite boasts its own unique charm.

Renowned local architects Van Egmond & Storey* designed the aptly-named Madrid Apartments in the then-popular Mediterranean style. Notable architectural features have been carefully retained, including the medallions, rounded entrances, arched windows on the main floor, porthole-style windows on the second level, and four bull’s eye windows at the southern end of the west facade.

Originally commissioned by Dr. Charles Dixon, The Madrid was purchased in 1954 by local businessman, Ross Sneath. Mr. Sneath sold the building in 1986 to the Kapoor family who has lovingly cared for the property ever since.

Madrid Apartments is on the suggested General Hospital Walking Tour and is a frequent stop in the ‘historic College Avenue’ segment of Jane’s Walk.

The building has been listed on Regina’s Municipal Heritage Inventory (formerly the Heritage Holding Bylaw) since 1989 – a list of properties identified as having heritage value and the potential to become designated heritage properties.
